Travelling soon? Simple tips to keep you comfortable

Whether you’re heading out on a road trip or taking a long flight, travelling can be hard on your body. Sitting for hours, carrying luggage, sleeping in an unfamiliar bed and spending more time walking than usual can all contribute to muscle and joint discomfort.

Common travel-related complaints include neck and shoulder tension, low back stiffness, tight legs and general muscle soreness.

The good news? A few simple habits can make your trip much more comfortable.

Why Does Travelling Make Us Sore?

Travel often means staying in one position for longer than usual. Long periods of sitting can contribute to stiffness through the neck, shoulders, hips and lower back. Add heavy luggage, poor sleeping positions and extra walking, and your muscles may have to work harder than they’re accustomed to.

Stress can also cause us to unconsciously tense the muscles around the neck and shoulders.

Easy Stretches While Travelling

You don’t need a gym or special equipment. Gentle movement throughout the day can help.

For the neck

Gently bring one ear toward your shoulder until you feel a comfortable stretch along the side of your neck. Sit on the opposite arm for an extra stretch. Hold for 10–15 seconds on each side. Don’t forget to keep breathing!

For the shoulders

Roll your shoulders slowly backward 10 times, then forward 10 times.

For an upper-back stretch, gently bring your arms forward and reach away from your body while allowing your upper back to relax. Hold for 10–15 seconds.

For the legs

While standing and holding onto something stable, bend one knee and bring your heel gently toward your buttock to stretch the front of your thigh. Hold for 15–20 seconds on each side.

For your calves, place one foot behind you with the heel on the floor and gently lean forward. Hold for 15–20 seconds, then switch sides.

Keep stretches gentle and comfortable. Stop if a movement causes sharp pain, dizziness, numbness or unusual symptoms.

A Few More Travel Tips

  • Move regularly. On longer flights or car trips, change position and walk when it’s safe to do so.
  • Pack lighter when possible. Heavy suitcases and shoulder bags can place additional strain on your neck, back and shoulders.
  • Use good luggage mechanics. Keep heavier items close to your body and avoid twisting while lifting.
  • Stay hydrated. It’s easy to forget to drink enough water while travelling.
  • Wear comfortable footwear. Vacation often means much more walking than we’re used to at home.
  • Don’t ignore persistent pain. Mild stiffness after travelling is common, but pain that persists or significantly limits your activity may benefit from assessment.

Before or After Your Trip: Physiotherapy & Massage Therapy

If you’re already dealing with neck, shoulder, back or leg discomfort, addressing it before your trip may make travelling more comfortable.

A physiotherapy assessment can help identify mobility, strength or movement issues that may be contributing to recurring pain or stiffness. Treatment may include manual therapy, individualized exercises, stretching and education to help you manage symptoms while you’re away.

Massage Therapy can also help address muscle tension, tightness and general soreness—whether you’re preparing for a long trip or recovering after returning home.
